Packaging Information

Q: What is OEM software?
OEM packaging, which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, is a full version 100% genuine software which comes in either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM format and includes a manufacturer serial key code for installation. Under the OEM license, the software is usually shipped with a piece of hardware. The packaging is raw(meaning it won't win any design awards) and stripped down to a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM sealed in a paper sleeve or cardboard flat pack and does not include a manual or any technical support from the manufacturer. Is your copy of Microsoft genuine?

The differences between Microsoft OEM and Full Retail are:

  1. Microsoft does not provide technical support on their OEM products
  2. OEM software does not include a paper manual
  3. OEM software does not come in a Retail Box. OEM cannot be used
  4. to upgrade from a previous version (i.e. Windows 98 or Windows 2000). However, you will be able to upgrade OEM to a future release.

Understanding your rights

Many software manufacturers often attempt to scare customers by placing text on the CD that says, for example; "For distribution with a new pc only", "Promotional Copy", "Not for Retail/Resale", or something to that effect, but rest assured it is in fact legal to purchase OEM software. The truth is that the First Sale Doctrine protects our right, as well as yours to sell OEM / CD Only software.

Software companies have attempted to circumvent the first sale doctrine by creating elaborate licensing agreements, in which they claim that the software is not actually yours, but that you only licensed it. Several courts however have found it does in fact meet the criteria of a sale and therefore have upheld the first sale doctrine.

The following is a collection of interesting articles involving US Copyright law, software, and the first sale doctrine, and how they apply to shrink wrap licenses as has been interpreted by US District Court judges:

Q: What types of packaging are available?
Academic Retail- Academic Retail packaging is full version software with a special discount for academic users. The products are fully licensed and will be delivered in factory-sealed retail boxes. You will be able to register the software with the software vendor and receive technical support from the software vendor support programs. Their features are IDENTICAL to their correspondent commercial version products unless explicitly stated in the product description.
Holographic CD + License Key- Holographic CD + License Key packaging comes with the original 100% genuine software CD and its 100% genuine serial key code for installation. These are full version software direct from the manufacturer. The serial key code may act as an activation code if the manufacturer requires activation. This packaging can also contain promotional labeling on the CD (i.e. Volume License, Student Media, Work at Home, Promotional Use), but all of these are 100% genuine and legal to use. This does not come in a box nor does it include a manual. Manuals are found on the software and can be printed any time. If a Microsoft product, the license can be printed from the "EULA" for personal records.
CD Only- CD Only packaging comes with the original 100% genuine software CD and its 100% genuine serial key code for installation. These are full version software direct from the manufacturer. The serial key code may act as an activation code if the manufacturer requires activation.
Download- Download packaging offers the latest software with absolutely no wait. Purchase from our affiliate, receive your confirmation via e-mail, and start downloading the executable file instantly. Have your software in minutes and avoid those shipping charges.
Full Retail- Full Retail packaging is brand new just like the software you purchase at your local retail store (i.e. Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, Wal-Mart). A retail box usually contains the software manual but manufacturers have moved away from traditional printing of manuals and have included a digital manual located in the software. This can be accessed and printed once the CD is inserted. Keep in mind that our retail box packaging may appear in a "DVD Case" as well. We will continue to follow industry standard guidelines for packaging set forth by each respective software manufacturer. This packaging style is subject to change without notice. Technical support is provided.
Full Retail CD- Full Retail CD packaging is everything from a Full Retail packaging(above) minus the box, manual, and other goodies that come with the box. Depending on what was originally in the box, the software may be in a CD sleeve, jewel case, or DVD case. In this case, it would be a CD sleeve. The product serial key is also included if originally given by manufacturer. The manual is located on the CD and can be printed. Technical support is also provided by the manufacturer.
Jewel Case- Jewel Case packaging was manufactured specifically to be sold in a jewel case. No box, no manual. This economical packaging method can also be found at your local retail stores like Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. An electronic manual can be found and printed from the CD. Technical support is also provided by the manufacturer.
OEM- OEM packaging, which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, is a full version 100% genuine software which comes in either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM format and includes a manufacturer serial key code for installation. The packaging is raw(meaning it won't win any design awards) and stripped down to a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM sealed in a paper sleeve or cardboard flat pack and does not include a manual or any technical support from the manufacturer. [Learn more about what OEM is?]
OEM +COA- OEM +COA packaging only refers to Microsoft OEM software. COA stands for Certificate of Authenticity and is a label that helps identify genuine Microsoft software. According to Microsoft, "A COA is not a software license, it is a visual identifier that assists in determining whether or not the Microsoft software you are running is genuine. However, without it, you will not have a legal license to run Microsoft software. A COA should never be purchased by itself without the software it authenticates." Under the OEM license, the software is usually shipped with a piece of hardware and Microsoft does not supply free technical support or installation support for this (*ideal for advanced computer users, but discounted for all- it's your choice)

Q: What is Edge-To-Edge Hologram?

The darkened copper transition zone between the copper and silver media design is unique for Microsoft Edge-to-Edge Copper Hologram media.
Background Hologram Background Hologram: This detailed holographic image changes colors as the CD is tilted.
Hologram Hologram: Silk Screen with Printed Text overlaid on holographic image. Note: the hologram is part of the CD and not a separate label.
